Home School Happenings Week 2

Momneet

This week was full of relaxing snow days, celebrating the year of the snake, and continuing on our cross curricular habitat project.

I grew up in East Vancouver, where a lot of the families and teachers came from cultures that celebrated the Lunar New Year. This meant I grew up getting to experience the excitement of dragon dances, an assortment of snacks, learning about the animal race, and my favourite part: red envelope galore! I now love being able to share these parts of different cultures with my children and pieces of my childhood. Even better, my best friend is Chinese and she celebrates Lunar New Year and makes it magical for my kids every year too (and by magical, I mean she gives them red envelopes full of cash).

We also created and sent out invites for our Art Show and Gala. Last year I came across a social media post where a mom talked about how she encouraged her child's love of art by putting on fancy art gallery shows for her kids every year. Fancy food was served and everyone dressed up. I was obsessed with this idea, and so we held our first ever Art Show & Gala last year for our close family. We are even more excited for it this year as we have been intentional with what we've been creating and what we can put on display for the art show this year. I look so forward to getting to share footage of the art gala with you in a few months!

Here is what we did in each subject this week:

Language Arts: We continued with our daily reading lessons from Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. This book has been so helpful for teaching sounds and words, and is a great foundational resource. We also practice daily sight words, writing, and read books together. What we focused on this week were 'funny' words. Aka, words that don't follow the phonics rules such as: is, of, was, or said. English is a tough language to learn to read and write.

Math: We continue on with daily practices of counting, cardinal and ordinal numbers, adding and subtracting up to 10, patterns, and starting to group and count by 2's & 10's. This week we also took math to the kitchen and added measurement into mix with a fun baking activity. In addition we always spend time with blocks and magnet tiles brushing up those engineering skills.

Socials, Science, and Art: We continued with our habitat project. The habitat has been painted blue to represent cold waters, we created icebergs by painting egg shell carton pieces white, she made a whale out of clay, and then we added in all the food that the whale needs for survival. I found this project to be so powerful because we had opportunities to discuss wants and needs, what is needed for basic survival, and the facts about the whales habitats multiple times. She loved all the art components that were involved. Our next steps here are to now write out her speech for her presentation at the art show. They also have a song under their belt which the kids are very excited to perform.

Physical Education: We spent a lot of time sledding and playing in the snow this week and sweating through our multiple layers of clothing!
